How do I have to install to use OnyxCeph³™ on all workstations in my practice network?

Perform the server setup (installation of the Onyx database) on a PC that is running all the time the practice is working. If there is a network server available in the practice, use this machine to install the database. However, it is not required to have a server operating system on the database host PC.

What is the differenced between the Server- and the Client installation?

The Onyx setup procedure consists of two parts: (1) Installation of the Onyx-SQL-Datenbank  (server setup) and (2) Installation of the OnyxCeph³™-clinets (client setup).

First, install the database server on a central, i.e. always available computer. Thereafter, install all clients. Both installations easily can be done from the setup CD-ROM which provides a splash window with two separate menu items for server and client installation. Alternatively, the installation files can be  downloaded online. In such case, unzip the download file to a temporarily shared network folder or USB stick. From within this folder, run file OnyxCDMenu.exe and continue identically as from CD-ROM.

Do I need to share the Onyx3Server database folder in the network?

No, all communication and transport between local client and database is done via TCP|IP using Port 16300 (which may be changed). Only in case  a common data folder (e.g. for archiving documents, mail slots, or image folders of 3rd party systems) sharing would be required.

Is it possible to use OnyxCeph³™ at home also?

Yes, it is. Each license comprizes a primary authorization key for the practice network and a secondary one for a standalone installation at home. Of course, instead of on a desktop PC, the standalone database also can be installed on a notebook. The only requirement is that both databases are authorized for the same practice name. Data can be syncronized between both instances by means of so-called Exchange-Containers. If both databases are available in the same network, the OnyxSync tool can be used for syncronization.

How can I move the Onyx database from an old to a new server computer?

  1. Make sure you have available an OnyxCeph³™ installation:
    • either you have a setup on CD-ROM -or-
    • you request a download link for the latest release here . Registered users also could download the latest release directly from their customer account after login on www.onyxceph.com.
  2. Update the existing installation on the present server using this setup.
  3. Install the OnyxCeph³™ server on the new computer by the same setup.
  4. Close the Onyx3Server at the new and the old computer. You can do this by program Onyx3Config which can be found on the desktop or in program group Onyx3 Server in the Windows Startup menu.
  5. Rename the following directories on the new computer:
    • ..\Onyx3Server\OnyxDB (e.g. to OnyxDB_demo)
    • ..\Onyx3Server\Pictures (e.g. to Pictures_demo).
  6. Copy subfolders ..\OnyxDB and ..\Pictures from the old computer to the corresponding folder ..\Onyx3Server\on the new server computer.
  7. Restart the Onyx database server as a program on the new computer. For this you may again use the program Onyx3Config.
  8. After that you will find the server program minimized in the system tray of the Windows taskbar. To maximize the program window, please doubleclick the icon .
  9. On tab |Settings|+|Directories| you will find a wheel button right from the Directories of OnyxCeph³™ Images entry. Click this button to re-index the image database.
  10. After re-indexing the database, if required, some additional workstations have to be installed.
    • For this, use again the setup CD-or-
    • start program "OnyxClientSetup" in server directory ..\Onyx3Server\Install\ via network (the install folder needs to be shared in the network for this purpose).
    • Alternatively, you also could copy the files in the ..\Onyx3Server\Install\ folder to a memory stick and install the clients from that stick.
  11. Please, launch program OnyxRegister out of the OnyxCeph3 program group at one of the workstations.
  12. Re-register OnyxCeph³™. For this purpose, please, contact us via internet, e-mail ore phone +49 371 9093 140 (see also here).
